Conference Attendees Accidentally Admit Why They Actually Came

THE NETWORKING LOUNGE — A networking exercise went off-script when an attendee answered 'Why are you here?' honestly instead of describing a passion for industry transformation.

The first guest was there to find clients. The second hoped to meet someone interesting who was not on her project team. A third had traveled primarily to become temporarily unreachable by his boss.

The fourth said his boss had sent him. His boss, reached by email, could not remember why. Together they agreed that collecting a tote bag would provide a tangible return on investment.

The facilitator attempted to restore the approved language of connection and learning. Nobody cooperated. By the end, the lounge had produced its most useful networking session: four people finally knowing what the others wanted.
